While you have dedicated an ample amount of time searching for a high-quality daycare facility for your child, accidents and injuries can still occur. Parents may pick up their children only to discover cuts or bruises on them.

The following is an overview of the most common causes of daycare injuries:

Playground

In most cases, these injuries occur on playgrounds. Children enjoy playing and running around, without considering their own safety in mind before jumping off a swing or climbing the monkey bars.

Unfortunately, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 200,000 children ages 14 and under are taken to the emergency room each year for injuries suffered on a playground. The severity of the injuries ranges from minor cuts and bruises to catastrophic injuries such as skull fractures and strangulation.

Falling Objects

Children can sometimes be fixated on loose items found on shelves, tables, desks, and chairs. There are many potential dangers that parents should look out for when choosing and touring a daycare facility. If the daycare has tall bookshelves, for example, they must be anchored securely to the wall and not hold any heavy objects.

Bottle Warmers

When a bottle warmer or a crock pot is used to heat up the formula for infants, the bottle could be hot enough to scald the inside of a child’s mouth or their skin. Additionally, these heating devices have cords attached to them, which children could pull down and cause a devastating injury. Ensure that the daycare center staff members are heating up the bottles under running water in the sink, which is a safer option.

Abuse & Negligence

While all of the common causes of injuries mentioned above are unintentional, parents should keep a close eye on intentional injuries sustained by their children. Whether they were inflicted by an abusive daycare worker or the result of lack of supervision, if you suspect your child is being abused or neglected, do not hesitate to contact law enforcement and investigate the issue.
